I also love maxi skirts for their ease of wear and styling. I recently wrote a post on the best shoes to wear with a long dress and this post would be pretty similar as maxi dresses and maxi skirts can be styled in similar ways. Remember that maxi skirts do not necessarily have to be reserved for the Summer or warmer weather but could also serve as transitional Fall pieces if paired with the proper footwear and outerwear.
As my blog loves to focus on versatile pieces of clothing that can be worn and styled multiple ways, I had to write a post to help give you some maxi skirt style options, not just with different footwear but also with different clothing items.. No one wants to invest their hard-earned dollars on pieces they may only be able to wear just once in this economy so make sure to keep reading to see ways you can recycle your maxi skirt, regardless of your personal style.

1) Pair your maxi skirt with ankle boots
As described in my post on how to wear maxi dresses in the Fall, a great way to carry your maxi skirts into the Fall (and even winter season), is to add a pair of boots. Ankle boots are the best option to go with when dealing with a maxi dress because most of your leg is already being covered. You could definitely go with a pair of knee-high boots or even tall boots but bare in mind that all that would be seen would be the top of the boots.

I particularly love these ankle boots.
While we’re on the topic of maxi skirts and boots, complete your chic Fall maxi skirt outfit idea with a leather jacket during the cooler months or days. For a grungier look, your ankle boots of choice could be combat boots. The leather jacket would make your overall look appear more sleek. It’s important to invest in a pair of good comfortable boots which you would be able to wear across seasons and styled with multiple pieces in your closet.
2) Maxi skirt with flat sandals or flip flops
A classic beach look right here. This look may scream vacation mode to most people but the good news is: you don’t necessarily have to be on vacation to enjoy this look right here. If you’re looking for a casual summer look you can pull off on a hot summer day, consider pairing your maxi skirt with a pair of strappy sandals or flip flops and a crop top. A nice tote bag would complete this breezy outfit along with some simple accessories. I personally prefer to go with a white maxi skirt if I’m headed somewhere with beautiful beaches.

If your maxi skirt has a slit, you should definitely try a fancier sandal, that way you can show off both your legs and footwear. Just remember that longer skirts are easier to pull off with more casual footwear because it’s mostly your toes that would be on display. In terms of outerwear, a light shawl or cover up would be nice to have handy in case it gets a little chilly or if you’re wearing a strapless top and wish to cover your arms. Take full advantage of this look during the warmer days and months because it’s definitely not one you can pull off in the Fall/winter.
THESE are apparently the most comfortable flip flops on the market.
3) Maxi skirt with high heels
If you intend to style your maxi skirt for special occasions, then throwing on a pair of pumps or strappy heels is a great option. Regardless of your body type, adding a pair of heels to your outfit instantly makes you look more formal and dare I say sexier? The length of your skirt would help determine the type of heels to choose for your outfit. Peep-toe heels work great if your skirt is very long and only your toes would be showing. A pair of chunky heels are the perfect choice of heels if you want to appear super tall underneath without anyone noticing and also work really well for really long skirts.

Stiletto heels are the perfect shoe to wear to formal events where your skirt hits just at your ankle or if your dress has a slit so that everyone can see that beautiful slim heel. If you prefer high waisted skirts, consider pairing your maxi with a white blouse and some beautiful gold accessories for a formal occasion. Play around with maxi skirts in a variety of colors to achieve a combination that you prefer. For formal wear during the Summer, opt for a maxi skirt in a bright color.
Remember that these style tips also work for midi skirts.
4) Maxi skirt with wedge sandals
Yes, I know you may be thinking ” aren’t wedge sandals considered high heels?” The answer may be yes but I wanted to split the two up because I find wedged heels to be less formal. A pair of wedges are the kind of shoes that are the perfect summer option for a stylish look (with the extra height) without the potential discomfort of a high heel. A perfect way to create a timeless maxi skirt outfit is by pairing your maxi skirt with a simple white tank top and a pair of wedges.

This look screams feminine and elegant thanks to the accentuation of the waist in addition to the heels. To complete your look, or make it more appropriate for colder weather while remaining casual, add a denim jacket to the mix. If you’re more apple-shaped and are concerned that your body shape would not look flattering in just a tank top and a maxi skirt, then the denim jacket addition is definitely the way to go.
5) Pair your maxi skirt with cowboy boots
Now you already know I’m not the biggest fan of this look on me (largely in part due to the fact that my large calves don’t allow me to rock higher boots), but I love it on others and so decided to include it to this list. For the maxi-cowboy boot look, I find that skirts in solid colors work best because they help to not take the attention away from the boots.

Normally, if you’re wearing cowboy boots, you want them to be seen. They typically have some interesting bold patterns going on and that is why they’re typically worn with a knee-length skirt, or short skirts – to show them off! Don’t worry, you could also pair them with a maxi skirt, just avoid a skirt that goes all the way to the floor.
These are such a classic Cowboy boot and they have great reviews.
6) Maxi skirt with sneakers
When I say sneakers, you know I’m especially referring to white sneakers. I do love me a maxi skirt paired with a t-shirt and a pair of white sneakers. These are my favorite shoes to go with a casual maxi skirt outfit. This is the ultimate airport look (after a pair of joggers of course) and a great summer outfit for days you need to look a little dressed up. You can easily swap the sneakers for a pair of black pumps and you would be ready for any more formal occasion.

If you’re feeling extra grungy, replace your white tee with a graphic one and perhaps throw on a blazer in a solid color for extra style points. During the Fall, an ankle boot could be worn for footwear and if you haven’t already, opt for a pair of white ankle boots, as I have explained how to style HERE.

I hope you have seen how easy it is to come up with different maxi skirt outfits, based on the different shoes you decide to pair your skirt with. The right pair of shoes instantly completed your look as well as it pulls it all together. All of the footwear mentioned above is probably already sitting in your closet, waiting to be worn. This means that you could pull off these looks, for the different seasons, at no extra cost to you.
Be mindful of the different lengths a maxi skirt can come in to ensure that the one you pick flatters you and does not overwhelm you because it’s pretty easy to go from looking long and elegant to looking frumpy when it comes to maxis.
If you are shorter, avoid skirts that cut you off right at your ankle. If you are more apple-shaped, go for skirts with interesting patterns and/or more volume. If you are more bottom heavy, I would suggest more solid colors and clean lines with your maxis.
Remember however that these are always suggestions and you can discover even more different ways to style your maxi skirts that you would prefer.
