6 Ways to Wear a Cable Knit Sweater

From the moment the fist cold wind hits around the end of September/early October, there is one piece of clothing you start noticing more and more and that is a cable-knit sweater. Cable knit sweaters have been a Fall and Winter wardrobe staple for many many years. This is thanks to their warmth, appealing design, functionality and versatility.

They are appropriate enough for the office while being easy enough to wear on a regular day with a pair of jeans. Cable sweaters also come in such an array of colors and styles that regardless of your personal style, you’re bound to find a cable knit sweater to your like.

Chunky cable-knits have found their way to many of our closets but tend to only get the love they need during the winter season. That’s just because they tend to emit a lot of warmth and this is not something you seek outside of the colder months.

However, do note that cozy cable knit sweaters can be worn in the Spring as well, especially if you live in Canada where the Spring can be just as cold as the Fall.

Before we dive into the different ways to wear cable-knit sweaters, it’s worth knowing how these sweaters got their name and what a classic cable knit looks like.

What is a cable-knit sweater?

A cable knit sweater is one that is knitted into a cabled pattern. Cable patterns are raised patterns that look like ropes or graids. They are also known as Aran sweaters, because they originated in the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland.

They can come in the form of a v-neck sweater, a turtle neck, open cardigan or vest. Sometimes they are also referred to as fisherman’s sweaters due to the roping design featured. They’ve also become pretty popular in the fishermen’s community.

Another great thing about cable sweaters is that they can be unisex. The regular crew necks can be worn by both genders, which is great if you have a significant other and are tired of wearing your same old cable knit. All that matters would be your bottoms of choice and footwear.

In today’s blog post, I would be showing you different ways to style a cable knit sweater for various occasions. Whether you’re dressing for a more casual event or for formal ones, you will come to see how easy it is to style your cozy sweater. You would also come to see why a cable sweater will always be an excellent choice of sweater for all your colder weather outfits.

How do I wear a cable knit sweater?

1) With a pair of trousers

The best way to style your oversized knit for the office is by pairing it with a pair of pants. This could be in the color of your choice as long as it compliments the color of your sweater.

High-waisted pants would be the most flattering and you could even tuck in part of your sweater into your pants. If you’re one to shy away from bright colors, neutral colors work perfectly here.

For example you could create a beautiful and eye-catching sweater outfit by pairing a white cable knit sweater with a pair of white pants. Complete your white sweater outfit with a par of ankle boots or loafers and you’re ready for the day.

You could also try playing around with sweater vests such as the one below. Adding a white shirt with long sleeves underneath would make it less casual and perfect for a board meeting.

2) With a pair of jeans

You can create a chic but casual look with your cable knits by pairing them with your favorite jeans. You already know my favorite jeans to wear in the cold months are skinny jeans as they’re easy to tuck into any type of boots. Pair your black skinny jeans with a cable sweater in a solid color to create a classic sweater outfit. Complete your look with either a pair of ankle boots or knee-high boots.

I love how this look could be worn for Casual Friday at the office or to grab some egg nog on a cold winter day. A turtleneck sweater would be a great option to go with on especially cold days and you could even get away with tying a scarf around your neck given how warm a cable knit is.

3) With a mini skirt

To create a more feminine look with your cable sweater during the winter months, consider throwing on a leather skirt and a chunky knit. You could wear a pair of black tights or leggings underneath for an extra layer of warmth. A chic look you could pull off during the sweater weather is a black skirt with a cable sweater in a rich Fall color such as brown, green or burgundy.

Complete your look with over-the-knee boots or even ankle boots and you’re ready for date night in the cold weather. If it’s not too cold outside, you could even sport a cropped sweater. Find out more on how to style a cropped sweater HERE.

4) With a midi or maxi skirt

Another great way to style a cable sweater for the cold weather is by pairing them with those midi and maxi skirts you’ve been wearing all year. You get to play around with different colors and patterns on your skirt while keeping your top neutral. This is what makes cable sweaters so easy to style – they tend to come in solid colors.

Add a pair of boots of your choice and a longline coat and you’re good to go. You could also thrown on a black leather jacket for a more casual vibe. This option also goes for pencil skirts and you could add a pair of tights underneath as well.

5) As a sweater dress

You have the option to go full cable knit by opting for a cable knit sweater dress. This could be a mini dress or a maxi one, depending on the whether and your preference. This would make dressing up that much easier as the only thing you’d have to think about are your choice of boots.

You could also go for a pair of high heels if you’re dressing for a special occasion. Wear sweater dresses to the office, for coffee or even for brunch. I have a full post dedicated to how to wear a sweater dress on the blog as well.

6) Over a dress

Another style trick you have to try this winter/spring is wearing a cable knit on top of a dress. I have said multiple times on this blog that you don’t have to put away all of your summer dresses once there is an increasing descent of the thermometer. Transition some of your dresses into winter looks by adding a chunky cable sweater on top. The next time you think you don’t have anything to wear, try this option.
